Fire Blankets: Smothering Small Fires Fast

No spray, no mess, no training required. A fire blanket smothers small fires instantly — every kitchen should have one.

← Back to Home Safety Guide

Fire blankets are a simple, highly effective tool for smothering small fires — particularly kitchen grease fires, clothing fires, and small appliance fires. Unlike fire extinguishers, they leave no chemical residue, require minimal training to use, and work silently and instantly. Drape, cover, done.

Why kitchens specifically: Grease fires cannot be extinguished with water — water causes violent steam explosions that spread burning grease. A fire blanket smothers the fire by cutting off oxygen without any chemical reaction.

Why It Matters

When to Use a Fire Blanket

Fire blankets are best for: stovetop pan fires (smother the pan), small appliance fires, waste bin fires, and clothing fires (wrap around the person). They are not suitable for large or spreading fires — in those cases, evacuate immediately and call 911. The rule is: if the fire is bigger than the blanket, get out.

How to Use One

Pull the tabs to unfold the blanket. Hold it in front of you like a shield to protect your hands and face. Place it gently over the fire — don't throw or drop it, as this can spread burning material. Leave it in place for at least 15 minutes after the fire appears out. The blanket starves the fire of oxygen.

Materials and Certifications

Quality fire blankets are made from fiberglass or silica fiber, rated to withstand temperatures over 1,000°F. Look for EN 1869 certification — a widely respected European standard used globally. Avoid thin or cheap models without certification markings.

Placement

Mount the blanket in a quick-release wall case near the kitchen — but not directly above the stove. If a fire starts on the stove, you need to pull the blanket down and toward the fire, not reach over the flames. Near the kitchen door or on a side wall is ideal.
